The B vitamin family includes vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folic acid or folate), and B12 (cobalamin).
Though they have essential roles in the body B vitamins are easily lost from the body through urine and sweat. This fact, combined with other factors such as a modern diet high in processed foods, means that it’s easy to become deficient in B-vitamins. Additionally, certain groups, including vegans, vegetarians, and the elderly, are at greater risk for Vitamin B deficiency.
Aging, for example, affects how well you take in and use B12 from foods. Deficiency can lead to numerous health issues, including blood sugar imbalances, neurological disorders, anemia, and depression. The body must convert B vitamins into their active coenzyme forms in order to absorb them. Some people have genetic alterations that reduce their body’s ability to perform these conversions. Vegan-friendly Advanced B Complex contains all of the B-vitamins in their active coenzyme forms, and in balanced doses to ensure that you get the most out of your B-complex.
Research
A study by Stracke et al (2011) investigated the role of B vitamins on mood and psychological strain associated with chronic work stress. Sixty participants completed a 3-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which personality, work demands, mood, anxiety, and strain were assessed. After 3 months of supplementation with two forms of high-dose vitamin B-complexes, treatment groups reported significantly lower personal strain and a reduction in confusion and depressed/dejected mood.
Earlier reports showed that by lowering homocysteine levels with B-vitamins, supplementation could slow the rate of brain tissue breakdown in patients with mild cognitive impairment. In a double-blind study by de Jager et al (2012), 133 participants were given a B-complex containing folic acid, vitamin B12 and B6, or placebo.
Homocysteine levels decreased by 30% in the B-complex group compared to the placebo group. The B-complex group also showed improvements in cognition and memory, and an overall decrease in global clinical dementia scores.
Benfotiamine is a very specific and unique form of vitamin B1. In a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled study by
Stracke et al (1996), a B-complex composed of benfotiamine with vitamin B6 and B12 was used to treat 24 diabetic patients each with multiple diabetic neuropathies (nerve damage from chronic high blood sugar or abnormal blood sugar levels). After 12 weeks of treatment, subjects given the benfotiamine B-complex showed significant improvements in nerve conduction velocity. Clinical trials such as this have shown that benfotiamine can improve nerve function by 30% and decrease nerve pain by 50% among diabetics.
